Does Mesothelioma Affect any Age Group, Gender, or Race More than Any Other?

Mesothelioma is not truly selective, but it is most commonly seen in males, particularly Caucasian, between the ages of 50 and 70.  Due to the conditions under which most people are exposed to this cancer, there are far less occurrences in females.  Most cases of mesothelioma have been caused in the work place.  Some occupations and jobsites where mesothelioma commonly originates include shipyards, home improvement jobs such as plumbing and wiring, power plants, and construction sites. These workers are more at risk for the disease and should take extra precautions in the work place.  Because of the scale of asbestos use between 1900 and 1960, the majority of those suffering from the illness are older.  The greatest number of deaths fall into the age range of 65 to 85 year olds.
