Is Mesothelioma More Common in Certain Areas of the Country or World?
Mesothelioma is most common in the United States because of the large increase in asbestos use in the early 1900’s. Many of the cases of mesothelioma within the United States occur in the coastal states. Asbestos exposure is extremely common in shipyards and related occupations, resulting in numerous mesothelioma cases clustered around these ports. The states that see the greatest numbers of deaths are California, Washington, Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, New York, and Vermont.
