How Does Mesothelioma Affect a Patient's Daily Lifestyle?

Upon finding out that one has mesothelioma, they may feel emotional and scared.  Aside from that, there are a number of other ways in which the lives of people with mesothelioma are changed when they discover that they have the disease.  Fatigue is one of the most commonly felt affects of the disease.  It can come from the lack of eating, the treatments, pain, and a number of other sources associated with the illness.  Fatigue and tiredness can affect a person’s social life as well as life in the home and office.  Other symptoms are typically easier to deal with, but can affect the person’s life as well.

If the patient is receiving chemotherapy they will experience hair loss and have to deal with its implications, as well as weight loss.  These things can be made more subtle with a few simple fixes.  Buying new clothing that provides a better fit can make the patient feel comfortable again with their appearance.  Wigs and hair pieces are common among those with cancer because they hide the imperfections that people see in themselves.  These steps can improve the patients image of themselves and make them think more positively on a daily basis.

Simple physical tasks can become a burden for those with mesothelioma.  Getting others to help the patient is ideal in this situation.  If family and neighbors are not available, social workers can work with patients in the home and place of business to assure that the patient is not overworked or overtired.
