How is Mesothelioma Diagnosed?
Mesothelioma can be diagnosed in two ways. The first method is a biopsy. In this procedure, a small sample of tissue is extracted from the patient for examination and diagnosis. The tissue is usually sent to a lab in a preservative. It is then set in wax and finely sliced so as to see it below a microscope. Several tests are run on the sample to determine whether or not the cells are cancerous.
The second method for possible diagnosis is imaging. This method is less accurate than the biopsy method. It includes such procedures as CT scans, x-rays, and MRI’s. In some cases, physicians will use a PET scan. This procedure can also detect whether or not the cancer is spreading.
