Are There any Statistics on Mesothelioma Deaths/Diagnoses?
Although many asbestos products have been banned in this country, an estimated 5,000 products are in still in existence today that contain the harmful substance. As many as 8 million people have already, at one point or another, been exposed to asbestos. This is because there are still many occupations in which exposure is part of an every day routine. One study specifically found that the death rate for those exposed to asbestos is close to 350 times that of the general population.
In the United States there are between 2 and 4 thousand cases of Mesothelioma found each year. For every 100,000 people there are about 1.8 incidences in the US and .9 incidences world wide. Mesothelioma has a long inactive, or latency, period of anywhere between 15 and 50 years. Over the past thirty years the number of cases has significantly increased and experts predict that the numbers will continue to increase for at least another 10 to 20 years. They say that by the year 2030, asbestos will have caused around 60,000 instances of mesothelioma, let alone other forms of cancer and disease that result in death. To date, over half a million asbestos claims have been filed against companies. In 1998 alone, 50,000 were filed.
