What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare, yet very serious type of cancer. Mesothelioma is named because of its uncontrollable growth of the cells of the mesothelium. The mesothelium is the part of the body that serves as a protective, two layered membrane that encases the internal organs of the body. These include the abdominal organs, the heart, and the lungs. These organs move easily within the chest cavity, thanks to the help of the fluid that is housed between the two layers. This cancer can affect any number of the various cells contained in this area, but they mostly target the pleural or peritoneal mesothelium cell membranes. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer and can be difficult to diagnose because it takes such a great amount of time for the symptoms to develop. The average lifespan for someone afflicted with mesothelioma is 12-18 months.
