Where in the Body does Mesothelioma Occur?
Mesothelioma usually occurs in two main areas; the chest cavity and the abdomen cavity. Pleural mesothelioma is the cancer that occurs in the chest cavity. Pleural effusions often occur with pleural mesothelioma. These effusions are an accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity.
Peritoneal mesothelioma involves cancer within the abdominal cavity. The cancer often infiltrates the spleen, liver, or even the bowels. Also, due to a build up of fluid within the abdomen, pain and swelling often occurs.
Pericardial mesothelioma, the rarest form of mesothelioma, occurs in the cavity surrounding the heart. Pericardial mesothelioma is often accompanied by persistent coughing and palpitations.
