The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Acute Pain
Acute Pain is pain which is typically short-lasting in duration and has an easily identifiable cause. While this pain may be recurring, it is typically sharp and fast usually followed by a dull aching. Acute pain usually starts centralized in one location before the pain spreads over a larger area. For example, when tissue is exposed to flame, the body responds first with a sharp painful sensation where the fire is in direct proximity with the epidermis (skin). Then, the entire region surrounding the direct burn will begin to ache and throb. Acute pain is the body’s alert of present destruction to tissue or disease. Typically, acute pain will respond favorably to medications, especially when the pain is associated with disease.
