The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Airborne Asbestos
Airborne asbestos are particles of asbestos fibers that enter the air. Airborne asbestos are the only form of asbestos that have been proven to cause disease. Airborne asbestos fibers enter the air by the mechanical degeneration of unbroken asbestos in the mining, milling, and manufacturing industries, among others. As these fibers enter the air, they are inhaled by the lungs and become embedded in lung tissue, similar to a splinter embedded in the epidermis (skin). As the body tries to expel the airborne asbestos fibers an inflammatory reaction occurs in the body, causing the development of asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.
