The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Bronchoscopy
A bronchoscopy is a procedure which allows doctors to examine the inside of the trachea into the bronchi. Bronchoscopy is typically performed for diagnostic purposes, and can determine the presence of tumors, infection, and even internal bleeding. Additionally, bronchoscopies can be performed to treat airway obstruction. There are two different types of bronchoscopes: rigid and flexible. Rigid bronchoscopies are employed in order to remove large foreign bodies, like tumor masses, in the body. Typically a general anesthetic is used when doctors employ a rigid bronchoscope. On the other hand, flexible bronchoscopy is performed when a patient is under local anesthesia. This procedure is typically associated with diagnostic purposes, such as the diagnosis of mesothelioma.
