The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Diagnosis
Diagnosis is the process of ascertaining a disease by its symptoms, signs, and the results of a variety of diagnostic tests. The conclusion reached from the results of these tests is also known as a diagnosis. Usually, if a patient is experiencing abnormal symptoms, a doctor will order various diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the symptoms. First, doctors will typically ask for medical history, including any exposure to carcinogenic substances, and family medical history. Doctors will also usually perform a full medical exam. The most commonly used diagnostic tests include urine samples, stool samples, blood tests, medical imaging, electrocardiograms, and in patients who are experiencing signs of cancer, biopsy. In patients with mesothelioma, biopsy is the only way to positively diagnose the cancer.
