The EPA is comprised of 18,000 people in various offices, and is led today by Stephen L. Johnson. The EPA is responsible for setting national standards for a myriad of environmental problems, including asbestos exposure. In addition to creating national regulations and sanctions, the EPA works closely with not only federal agencies, but also state and local governments, and even Native American tribes. The EPA has the authority not only to issue permits, but also to enforce and monitor state compliance with environmental rules and regulations. Additionally, the EPA works with industries and deals with issues such as clean air, clean land and clean water, working to keep pollutants at bay.
