The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Larnyx
The larynx, also commonly referred to as the voice box, is an organ in the neck which serves to not only protect the trachea but also produce sound. The larynx contains the vocal chords, and is typically used for breathing, swallowing and talking. The structure of the larynx is composed of cartilage, which is held together by ligaments and muscle. The larynx aids the body by closing during swallowing, to prevent foods from entering the lungs. The larynx also produces a cough reflex to protect the lungs. Additionally, the larynx aids in the articulation of sound by manipulating pitch and volume in the voice.
