The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system collects lymph fluid by diffusing it into lymph capillaries and returning it into the circulatory system. Lymph fluid originates in the circulatory system: as blood plasma leaks from the veins and arteries into surrounding tissues, it then becomes lymph fluid. The lymphatic system acts as an additional circulatory system in the body, working with white blood cells to protect the body from infection. Unlike veins, the lymphatic system has no pump and depends entirely on the movement of the skeletal muscles for fluid to move. The contractions of the skeleton move lymph fluid into capillaries, which then transport the fluid to larger lymphatic vessels. When antigens invade the body, the antigens are collected by tissue, and then sorted and attacked by the lymph system.
