The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Massage
Massage is the practice of systematic manipulation of the soft tissues of the body through pressure, vibrations, tension and motion. Massage is used for therapeutic purposes such as injury healing, tension and stress relief, pain management, and even to improve circulation. Typically, patients who receive massage as a form of therapy will lie down on a massage table or chair. The patient is typically unclothed, and the body is usually covered with warm towels. Usually the masseuse will begin by massaging the back, and will then have the patient roll over to massage the front. It is important that the patient to relax completely in order for the full therapeutic benefits to be reached. Massage can be extremely helpful for coping with not only physical pain but also anxiety in patients with mesothelioma.
