A medication is a licensed drug that is taken to treat an illness or medical condition, or reduce symptoms of that illness. Medications are divided into two classes, over the counter medications and prescription only medications. Over the counter medications are available in supermarkets and pharmacies, and are generally considered safe enough that a person will not cause accidental harm to themselves if not taken as instructed. Prescription only medicines must be prescribed by a doctor and must legally be taken as instructed.
