The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Mesothelium
The mesothelium is a protective, double layered membrane that protects the internal organs of the body, including the lungs, heart, abdominal organs and reproductive organs. The first layer of the mesothelium directly surrounds the organ, and the second layer of the mesothelium forms a sac around it. Between the two layers of the mesothelium, a fluid is released which allows the moving organs to be lubricated and slide easily against other organs and surrounding tissues. Depending on the part of the body, the mesothelium has several different names. The pericardium mesothelial tissue protects the heart, the pleural mesothelium protects the chest cavity, and the peritoneum mesothelium protects the organs of the abdominal cavity.
