The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Metastasis
Metastasis is the spread of cancer from its primary tumor to other places in the body. Malignant tumor cells break away from the primary tumor, and then penetrate lymphatic vessels and blood vessels, causing the transportation of the malignant cells to distant parts of the body. These cells then penetrate healthy cells, causing the cancer to spread throughout the body and blood stream. Metastatic tumors are common in the late stages of cancer, and can be prevented with the early detection of cancer cells.
