The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Necrosis
Necrosis is the process of unplanned cell death. There are several causes of necrosis, including injury, cancer, infection, and inflammation. Programmed cell death, known as apoptosis, is the orderly death and cleanup of cells. Unlike apoptosis, necrosis is generally more difficult for the body to identify, which causes debris to be left in the body. Additionally, when cells die by necrosis they may release harmful chemicals that damage surrounding tissue.
