The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Pathologist
A pathologist is a doctor who studies the progress of disease and illness in their microscopic forms. Specifically, a pathologist studies the structural and functional changes in cells which cause them to mutate. Pathologists also are responsible for processing and reporting tissues that are taken during biopsy and surgery. When tissue samples are taken, the pathologist will typically perform diagnostic tests using microscopes and stain technology. After the sample has been processed, the pathologist reports back to the doctor. Although pathologists typically do not ever discuss results with a patient, they are crucial in the diagnosis process as they interpret and analyze specimens.
