The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Pericardium
The pericardium is the mesothelial membrane surrounding the heart. This double layered membrane works to protect the heart. The first layer of the pericardium immediately surrounds the heart, and the second layer forms a sac around it. Between the two layers of the pericardium, a lubricating fluid is released in order to protect the heart, and to allow the heart to glide easily against surrounding tissues. Pericardial mesothelioma attacks the pericardium.
