The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Peritoneum
The peritoneum is the mesothelial membrane surrounding the abdominal cavity as well as many of the abdominal organs. The peritoneal mesothelium is a protective, double layered membrane. The first layer of the peritoneum immediately surrounds the abdominal cavity. The second layer forms a sac around the first layer, with fluid lubricating the area between the layers. This lubricant allows the organs of the abdomen to glide easily around surrounding tissue, and it protects the abdomen from damage. Peritoneal mesothelioma attacks the peritoneum.
