The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Permissable Exposure Limit
The permissible exposure limit or PEL is the legal standard published by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for exposure to asbestos. PEL is measured in parts per million (ppm) or in milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). The permissible exposure limit is a time weighted average. Therefore, workers may be exposed to asbestos in concentrations higher than the permissible amount, but only for limited periods. In other words, the average concentration over an eight hour period must always remain below the PEL.
