The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Pleura
The pleura is the mesothelial membrane surrounding the chest cavity and lungs. The pleura has two layers, which work not only to protect the chest cavity, but also to allow the lungs and chest cavity to glide easily around surrounding tissue. The first layer of the pleura surrounds the chest immediately, and then second layer forms a sac around the first layer. Between the two layers is a lubricant, called pleural fluid. Pleural mesothelioma, the most common form of mesothelioma, attacks the pleural mesothelium.
