The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Primary Care Doctor

Primary care doctors are doctors who have managed a person's health care over an extended period of time. Primary care doctors can help patients to make long term decisions and can help patients to discuss prevention methods and treatments. Additionally, a primary care physician will usually take part in the diagnosis process by giving the patient a general physical exam, which usually is the first step in cancer diagnosis. Although a primary care doctor cannot give a patient any confirmed mesothelioma diagnosis, they will discuss the patient's history, including any exposure to asbestos, which can give oncologists clues as to what further steps should be taken.
