The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Stress
Stress is a medical term for a wide range of strong physiological and psychological stimuli, both internal and external. There are two different types of stressors, or factors which produce stress. Processive stressors are elements in the environment that produce fight or flight responses in humans. For example, elevated sound levels and bright lights are perceived as potential danger by humans, and cause the body to experience stress. Systemic stressors cause a disturbance in the body's state of homeostasis. For example, mesothelioma is a systemic stressor. Stress as experienced by humans can cause intense emotions and physical pain.
