The Mesothelioma SOS Glossary - Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) Therapy is a treatment which uses an electronic device that produces electrical signals used to stimulate nerves through the skin. It is administered through electrodes which are fasted to the skin, and the TENS device usually consists of a small transformer, frequency and intensity controls, electrode wires, and a small pulse generator. Additionally, a cream is usually applied to the skin in order for there to be more conductivity in the nerves. TENS is usually performed as a pain relief method, and different muscles can be activated depending on the placement of the electrodes on the body. While TENS is not meant to treat illnesses, many patients benefit from the symptom relief of TENS therapy.
