Atlantic Dry Dock
Atlantic Dry Dock, located in Jacksonville, Florida, was established in 1966. It was a by-product of Atlantic Marine (AM), which was opened in 1964 for the express purpose of building ships. When it became apparent that AM needed room for a repair facility, Atlantic Dry Dock was built on an adjacent property and became part of the AM family.
Business at both facilities grew immensely during the 70s and 80s, necessitating additions to both AM and Atlantic Dry Dock during those decades. New repair piers and launchways appeared and a 4,000-ton marine railway facility was added. Orders kept pouring in.
In 1989, AM acquired ADDSCO Industries in Mobile, AL and added two more shipyards. From that point on, the Mobile facility concentrated on shipbuilding while AM and Atlantic Dry Dock in Jacksonville focused on repairs and conversion. Both locations are quite busy and can handle ships of various sizes, including large vessels.
At any ship repair or building facility, employees can be exposed to asbestos materials while on-the-job, especially when working on older boats. Great care should be taken to avoid the inhalation of asbestos fibers, but often, employees were not supplied with proper protective gear, especially prior to the asbestos warnings of the mid-1970s.
If you were exposed to asbestos while working at Atlantic Dry Dock or Atlantic Marine and have developed mesothelioma, take time to learn about your legal rights as well as the ins and outs of the disease and its treatment. Order our free Mesothelioma Resource Kit for more information.
