Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Co., Inc.
More than 75 years old, Bender Shipbuilding has long been one of the premiere yards on the Gulf of Mexico. Located in Mobile, Alabama, Bender has more than 7,000 feet of deep water frontage, accessed by a 42-foot deep channel from the Gulf of Mexico.
One of the largest shipbuilder and repair facilities on the Gulf, Bender has 4 dry docks; several wet docks; complete carpenter, machine, and electrical shops; 11 heavy-duty overhead cranes, 60,000 square feet of covered storage space, and complete equipment to handle any size and type repair or conversion to any classification society.
Bender also builds many different types of vessels including crabbers, offshore supply vessels, push boats, shrimp boats, factory trawlers, riverboats, passenger vessels, tuna seiners, and tug boats. The company boasts that 800 Bender-built boats currently operate worldwide. Bender holds many commercial contracts with large companies in the Gulf area.
Like any shipyard that was involved in both building and repair prior to the 1980s, Bender made wide use of asbestos-containing materials. Employees were often unknowingly exposed to the material while performing a number of different tasks. Those who may have suffered exposure to dangerous asbestos fibers include insulators, plumbers, electricians, boilermakers, pipe fitters, and iron workers. Asbestos was often handled without proper protection as employees were rarely issued face masks, gloves, and other clothing items that may have protected them.
If you or a loved one was exposed to asbestos while employed at Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Co. and have developed an asbestos-related disease like mesothelioma, you have a right to legal recourse. Send for our free Mesothelioma Information Kit to learn more about the disease and your options.
