GMD Shipyard
Located within the confines of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, GMD Shipyard is the largest dry dock facility in New York City.
GMD offers two 1090' x 150' graving docks, in addition to 1100' of wet berth, and provides 24-hour full service operational capabilities. The shipyard operates cranes ranging from 15 tons mobile to 200 tons gantry and GMD’s skilled technicians are trained to accomplish a variety of types of maintenance or repairs.
Vessels of various sizes are brought here for both routine maintenance and emergency drydocking. GMD boasts a variety of full-service shops on-site including carpenter, electrical, machine, piping, plate, rigging, sandblasting and paint, and tailshaft shops.
GMD Shipyard has serviced vessels for a number of popular cruise lines in addition to oil companies, the NY Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Working on ship repairs, like the ones performed at GMD Shipyard, can present a hazard to employees, especially when the ships were built prior to the asbestos warnings of the mid-1970s. Workers should be sure to always wear protective gear when working near asbestos or other toxic materials.
Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. If you were exposed to asbestos at GMD Shipyard and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may have a right to financial compensation.
