Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant
The Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, Westchester County, New York, was built by Consolidated Edison, Inc. This early nuclear plant made use of an experimental pressurized water reactor in order to produce energy to fuel electricity for millions of area residents. After a steam leak caused water to enter the reactor vessel, Indian Point Nuclear Plant I was shut down for good in 1974.
Just like a conventional power plant, nuclear plants use miles and miles of pipes to accomplish the task of supplying power through nuclear means to homes and businesses in the area. Turbines, boilers, generators, and other pieces of equipment that generate high levels of heat also need insulation, and during the time that Indian Point was constructed, asbestos-containing materials were the insulation of choice.
Former employees may be concerned with exposure that might have occurred during their 12 years of employment at Indian Point, and though the powerhouse has been closed for more than thirty years, it often takes decades for asbestos-related cancer to surface. Exposure may have been prompted by the use of asbestos clothing worn to protect employees, or exposure to damaged insulation or other compromised asbestos-containing products, causing airborne particles to be inhaled.
Were you employed at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant? Have you been diagnosed with Mesothelioma? If so, send for our free Mesothelioma Information Kit to learn more about the disease and your rights as a victim of asbestos-related cancer.
