Naval Station Ingleside

On the northern shore of Corpus Christi Bay, in an area known as the Coastal Bend, Naval Station Ingleside (NSI) is one of three South Texas installations that comprise Naval Region South.  It is located beside the Corpus Christi ship channel, which links the Port of Corpus Christi with the Gulf of Mexico.

The mission of Naval Station Ingleside is “to provide logistics, base support and force protection to all the tenant commands that make up the Mine Warfare forces.”  Nearly 3,000 civilian, military, and sub-contracted workers are employed at the site.

This naval station was opened in February 1988.  NSI was originally supposed to be the homeport of a training aircraft carrier, USS LEXINGTON, and a battleship, USS WISCONSIN and its surface action group.  However, those ships were soon decommissioned and the focus of Naval Station Ingleside changed.  Instead, the Secretary of the Navy announced plans to homeport Avenger Class mine countermeasures ships and Osprey Class coastal mine hunters at Ingleside.  It is now home to the Navy's Mine Warfare Force, comprised of 14 MCM-1 Avenger Mine Countermeasure Class vessels, 10 MHC-51 Osprey Mine Hunter Class vessels and the Mine Countermeasures Command, Control and Support Ship USS Inchon.

If you are one of the many employees who worked at Naval Station Ingleside during the past two decades, you may have encountered some hazardous materials while working on mine ships at NSI.  Though the naval station is less than 20 years old and constructed since asbestos warnings were issues, old ships brought to NSI may still carry asbestos materials in their insulation, gaskets, boilers, or floor and ceiling tiles.

If you worked at NSI and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, order our free Mesothelioma Information Kit for more details about the disease and its treatment as well as your right to legal recourse as a sufferer of an occupational disease.
