Lake Union Drydock
Lake Union Drydock Company was established in 1919 and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Union near Seattle, Washington. The lake and facility are accessible from the Puget Sound via locks.
The company describes itself as a full-service shipyard that specializes in complex ship overhauls, but welcomes a wide variety of projects of all sizes. This 12-acre fresh water facility boasts three dry docks that can service vessels up to 410 feet in length. There’s also 3,000 lineal feet of pier space with full utilities.
Lake Union Drydock replaces keels on wooden ships, lengthens or widens vessels, builds fish processing lines for factory trawlers, completes major electrical installations, builds and installs ventilation systems, and recently completed a $25 million renovation project on a Washington State ferry. They also conduct business internationally and often work on Russian fishing vessels.
For nearly 90 years, Lake Union Drydock Company has employed dozens of shipbuilders and repair personnel. Each has performed a variety of tasks from electrical work and plumbing installation to shipfitting and insulation work. Throughout the past several decades, many shipyard workers have been sickened due to on-the-job exposure to asbestos materials often removed or installed during ship repairs or construction, especially prior to the asbestos warnings issue in the mid-1970s.
