NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Corp.)
NORSHIPCO, founded in 1915, is a subsidiary of United States Marine Repair Incorporation. Located at the Hampton Roads Port in Norfolk, Virginia, it is a non-nuclear repair facility that also does conversions and modernization on all types of vessels. It is currently the largest private sector ship repair facility on the East Coast. The facility stretches over 110 acres on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River with frontage of approximately 5,000 feet.
While NORSHIPCO does much commercial work for individuals and corporations, it also served the U.S. military during both World Wars as well as the Korean conflict. The U.S. government continues to be one of the yards best customers and the military has cited NORSHIPCO as one of its “Top 100” defense contractors.
In 1998, NORSHIPCO was acquired by United States Marine Repair, a company which owns four other facilities on the East, West, and Gulf Coasts.
Ship repair can be a dangerous business. Shipyard workers have one of the highest incidences of injury and serious illness in the country. Repairing old or damaged ships often means exposure to toxic materials, such as asbestos, which is found in insulation, pipes, gaskets, boilers, and floor or ceiling tiles. Damaged asbestos causes airborne fibers to circulate and the asbestos can then be inhaled by workers, especially in areas with poor ventilation.
If you’ve developed an asbestos-related disease like mesothelioma due to employment at NORSHIPCO or United States Marine Repair, you have a right to prompt treatment, knowledgeable doctors, and financial assistance. For more details, order our free Mesothelioma Information Packet.
