Portland Shipyard
The Portland Shipyard (PSY) is one of the largest repair facilities in the world. It is situated on 40 acres on the Wilamette River and is owned and operated by Cascade General.
The Portland Shipyard pioneered modular shipbuilding in 1942 when Henry Kaiser opened the yard in hopes of meeting the war effort. Cascade took over the operations of the shipyard in 1995 and continues to expand and improve the yard so as to maintain its reputation as an on-time, on-budget repair facility, even for difficult repairs.
PSY boasts excellent facilities for repairing everything from tugboats to super tankers. Assets include the Panamax (114' wide) Dry Dock 3 as well as Dry Dock 1, serving smaller craft. Dockside, you’ll find 17 Whirley cranes (22-134 tons), 550,000 square feet of covered craft shops, as well as the finest in state-of-the-art ship repair equipment. A 200,000 barrel, ballast-water treatment plant is, according to the company, one of many unique assets which the company offers to shipping customers.
Throughout the past 60 years, employees at the Portland Shipyard, including those who served as pipe fitters, insulators, welders, electricians, and plumbers may have worked with asbestos-containing materials while building new ships or repairing old vessels. Many parts of ships contain asbestos, especially those built prior to the asbestos warnings of the 1970s. Products such as concrete, pipes, gaskets, floor and ceiling tiles, and many others usually contained this toxic material. As these items were often damaged during repair or construction, workers may have inhaled hazardous airborne fibers.
