Willamette Iron and Steel Yard
Established in 1904 in Portland, Oregon, Willamette Iron and Steel Yard played a role in both World War I and II. The yard built small naval auxiliaries, minesweepers, patrol craft, submarine chasers, and non-self-propelled lighters. Prior to and between the wars, the yard concentrated primarily on the building and maintenance of small commercial vessels.
After 1945, Willamette Iron and Steel continued as a repair yard and built an occasional ship. As worked dropped off and Willamette was replaced by larger shipyards, the yard was forced to close in the 1990s.
During the decades which Willamette Iron and Steel Yard employees repaired and built both commercial and military vessels, workers may have been exposed to hazardous materials, especially asbestos. Those at highest risk for developing asbestos related diseases include insulators, pipefitters, shipfitters, steel workers, electricians, and plumbers. Asbestos can be found in gaskets, insulation, floor and ceiling tiles, dry wall, and a host of other shipboard items.
If you were employed at Willamette Iron and Steel Yard and have developed an asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma, you’ll want to take a moment to gather pertinent information about this aggressive cancer, its treatment, and other important issues related to the disease.
