After many complaints about the presence of asbestos in a large number of schools on the island of Guam, the Guam Public School System (GPSS) has been allotted $2.5 million from a bond issue for the abatement of the hazardous mineral.
According to a story aired on KUAM-TV, Guam’s Attorney General Alicia Limtiaco has expressed concerns about the number of schools on the island that contain asbestos floor tiles. Earlier this week, she held a press conference outlining her worries about the 36 schools where the toxic mineral is present.
The story notes that there is no starting or ending date for the abatement project, but GPSS spokesperson Gerry Cruz says that a report issued in 1996 by Duenas & Associates noted that the designated abatement company would need to remove and dispose of all asbestos-containing tiles.
Cruz told KUAM News that nothing was done in 1996 because there was an issue of funding. “It takes money and if you’re going to do it on a large scale (and that was in the plan by the engineers) that if we’re going to do a lot of schools, it’s going to require a lot of equipment, manpower and a lot of safety issues have to be taken into consideration when you remove large quantities,” Cruz explained.
