Israel Approves $1.2 Million for Asbestos Removal
January 15, 2006 - The Israeli Ministry for Environmental Protection has announced the approval of funds in excess of $1.2 Million (5 million shekels) “for the treatment of friable asbestos waste in the Western Galilee and for the removal of asbestos cement roofs from public buildings throughout Israel.”
The announcement comes in the wake of several dozen requests by various municipalities seeking help in removing the health hazard from public buildings and areas. The largest concern thus far is the region of Galilee, particularly Western Galilee, where it is believed that asbestos waste from a local cement factory was discarded or sold to contractors and private individuals for uses such as roads, yards and infrastructure for cowsheds and chicken coups. Eitanit Cement, situated on the coast in the north of Israel, opened in 1952 and closed 45 years later in 1997.
The funds will also cover requests from 27 local authorities who will use the money to remove asbestos roofs from 114 public buildings. Tamar Bar On, head of the Asbestos Division, stated that the Environmental Protection Ministry will provide more funds next year for those municipalities that were not covered this time around. She expects the amount will increase to 8 million shekels during the next fiscal year.
